Nick Bosa Confirmed to Play for 49ers in Week 1 Against Rams in Melbourne

The 49ers have removed the uncertainty around Nick Bosa: the star pass rusher is expected to play against the Rams in Melbourne after recovering from last season's ACL tear.

The San Francisco 49ers are no longer treating Nick Bosa’s Week 1 availability as a mystery. The team has publicly confirmed that its star defensive end is expected to play against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, giving Bosa his first regular-season action since a knee injury wiped out most of his 2025 campaign.

Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 last season and missed the final 14 games. His summer was also managed carefully because of knee tendinitis, but he returned to full practice on Sept. 2 and traveled with the team to Australia. The 49ers’ confirmation now turns the conversation from whether he will dress to what kind of workload and impact he can produce after such a long layoff.

Bosa has reached the checkpoint that matters most

Rehabilitation stories can become a string of partial milestones: individual drills, limited practice, full practice and travel clearance. Each step matters, but none is the same as being available for a regular-season snap. Bosa has now crossed that final threshold.

That is especially important for a 49ers defense that spent much of last season without one of the league’s premier edge threats. A healthy Bosa changes protection decisions before the ball is snapped. Offenses have to decide when to send help toward him, when to chip with a tight end or back and how quickly the quarterback must get the ball out. Even before he records a pressure, his presence can influence where the offense sends resources.

Week 1 will test readiness, not just medical clearance

The fact that Bosa will play does not mean San Francisco needs him on the field for every defensive snap. Returning from an ACL tear is not only about the reconstructed ligament; it is about restoring football conditioning, reaction speed and confidence under contact. The 49ers can manage his workload while still benefiting from his ability in high-leverage situations.

That may be particularly useful on third downs and obvious passing situations, when Bosa’s rush plan can matter most. If San Francisco can keep the game script favorable, it may be able to maximize his impact without asking him to immediately reproduce the snap volume of a full midseason game.

The Australia opener adds another recovery variable

The 49ers and Rams are playing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. San Francisco arrived early and has practiced in Melbourne, giving players time to adjust to the travel and time-zone change. Bosa making the trip was already a positive sign; the team confirming his availability means it is comfortable enough with the total recovery picture to expose him to the unusual opening-week environment.

The 49ers are not the only team managing a superstar comeback in this matchup. Los Angeles ruled Aaron Donald out and decided not to have him travel, while Myles Garrett is expected to play. That creates an unusual contrast: the Rams are taking the long view with Donald, while San Francisco believes Bosa has progressed far enough to make the opener part of his return plan.

George Kittle remains a separate Week 1 question

Bosa’s status should not be blended with every other 49ers injury. Tight end George Kittle, returning from an Achilles injury, has also traveled and is trending in the right direction, but the team is still monitoring his week. FSN recently covered Kittle’s Week 1 push and the roster moves around the tight end room. Bosa’s confirmation is a distinct development: one star’s availability is now settled while another remains under evaluation.

That distinction matters for readers and for San Francisco’s game plan. Bosa’s role is defensive and easier to isolate. Kittle’s availability would alter personnel packages, blocking and target distribution on offense. The 49ers can now plan the defensive front with Bosa included, even as the offensive staff waits on the final tight end picture.

What Bosa changes against the Rams

A Rams offense facing Bosa has to account for pressure off the edge on every meaningful passing down. That can change protection slides and create one-on-one opportunities elsewhere on the 49ers front. San Francisco does not need Bosa to win every rush for him to make the unit better; it needs the Rams to treat him as the kind of threat who can wreck a play if left isolated too often.

His return also restores an emotional center of the defense. The first game after a long injury is often framed around the individual player, but teammates benefit from getting a familiar cornerstone back in the huddle. A defense that spent nearly an entire season adapting without him can return to calls and pressure structures designed with his skill set in mind.

The next question is how much Bosa can give San Francisco

Medical availability is now answered. Performance is not. The 49ers will learn Thursday how Bosa responds to full-speed game action, how many snaps he can handle efficiently and whether the knee tendinitis that slowed parts of his summer stays quiet after a real workload.

Fans setting Week 1 confidence picks can compare the matchup at FSN’s Week 1 rankings. For San Francisco, the most important development is already official enough to shape the plan: Nick Bosa is expected to be on the field when the 49ers and Rams open the season in Melbourne.
