Dak Prescott became the Dallas Cowboys’ all-time leader in career touchdown passes Sunday, throwing four scores in a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders and passing Tony Romo’s franchise mark of 248.
Prescott’s record-breaking 249th touchdown pass came on a 24-yard strike to CeeDee Lamb in the fourth quarter, capping a performance in which he completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards and finished with a 143.8 passer rating.
Prescott moved past Romo with a four-touchdown day
Prescott entered the game needing four touchdown passes to move into sole possession of first place. He opened the scoring with a touchdown to Lamb, added two more to tight end Jake Ferguson and then found Lamb again for the franchise record.
The fourth touchdown pushed Prescott to 249 for his career, one ahead of Romo. The milestone came in Prescott’s 11th season with Dallas, a decade after he originally took over the starting job when Romo suffered a preseason back injury.
Prescott and Lamb also continued one of the most productive quarterback-receiver pairings in team history. Prescott has now thrown 37 touchdown passes to Lamb, the most to any target in his career.
The record came with Dallas needing a Week 2 response
The timing mattered for more than the record book. Dallas entered Sunday coming off a 28-20 Week 1 loss to the New York Giants, a game FSN covered when the Cowboys opened the season with a divisional loss in New York.
Against Washington, Prescott was efficient from the start and Dallas avoided the self-inflicted mistakes that hurt the offense in Week 1. The Cowboys improved to 1-1 and extended Prescott’s home winning streak against NFC East opponents.
Prescott is closing in on other Cowboys benchmarks
The passing-touchdown record is now his, but the franchise wins list remains another major benchmark. Prescott has 84 regular-season victories. Roger Staubach finished with 85 and Troy Aikman holds the franchise lead with 94.
Those numbers underline how much regular-season production Prescott has accumulated in Dallas. The larger legacy question, however, remains tied to postseason success because the Cowboys have not reached the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season.
What the record means for the Cowboys
Prescott’s milestone does not change the immediate task in front of Dallas, but it does add another franchise record to a résumé that already places him near the top of multiple Cowboys passing categories.
For a team trying to rebound from a disappointing 2025 season and a Week 1 loss, the more important short-term takeaway is that Prescott delivered an efficient four-touchdown performance in a division game. Dallas now turns toward a Week 3 international matchup against Baltimore in Rio de Janeiro with its offense coming off its best showing of the young season.
