The New York Jets promoted veteran linebacker Troy Reeder from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Tuesday, adding an experienced special-teams and defensive depth option after injuries thinned the position group in Week 2.

The move comes after linebackers Kiko Mauigoa and Marcelino McCrary-Ball were injured against Green Bay. Reeder had already been elevated from the practice squad for that game, so the permanent roster move gives New York a steadier option as it prepares for Week 3.

Why the Jets promoted Troy Reeder

Reeder was a standard gameday elevation for the Jets’ Week 2 game against the Packers, when he handled a significant special-teams workload and recorded three tackles. New York’s official Week 2 roster announcement noted that Reeder had been elevated from the practice squad before the game.

The need for experienced depth became more pressing after Mauigoa left the game with a quadriceps injury and McCrary-Ball suffered an ankle injury. SNY reported Tuesday that the Jets were signing Reeder to the active roster, while Sports Illustrated’s Jets coverage also tied the promotion to New York’s current linebacker injuries.

The promotion does not by itself confirm that either injured linebacker will miss Week 3, but it gives the Jets protection if one or both are limited or unavailable.

What Reeder gives New York

Reeder brings considerably more NFL experience than a typical emergency call-up. The veteran has appeared in more than 100 regular-season games during stops that have included the Rams, Chargers and Lions, and he has extensive special-teams experience in addition to defensive snaps at linebacker.

That matters for a Jets roster that has already been forced to shuffle personnel early in the season. Football Sports News previously covered New York’s Week 2 injury-related lineup changes as well as the decision to place rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. on injured reserve.

Week 3 implications for the Jets

New York’s next game puts additional value on having reliable linebacker and special-teams depth. Reeder now occupies a full 53-man roster spot instead of relying on another temporary elevation, allowing the Jets to use their gameday practice-squad elevations elsewhere if needed.

If Mauigoa or McCrary-Ball is unable to play, Reeder could become part of the defensive rotation in addition to his special-teams responsibilities. If both are available, his promotion still strengthens the bottom of the active roster and gives the coaching staff an experienced contingency option.

Jets still need clarity on injured linebackers

The key next step is the team’s official Week 3 practice and injury reporting. Until New York provides participation levels or game-status designations, Reeder’s promotion should be viewed as a roster-depth response rather than confirmation of a specific absence.
