The Dallas Cowboys will be without linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and safety Malik Hooker against Washington in Week 2, and rookie Jaishawn Barham is set to step into a major communication role in their absence.

Dallas officially ruled Overshown out with a hamstring injury and Hooker out with a fractured forearm on Friday. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer also confirmed that Barham will start at MIKE linebacker and wear the defensive green dot, making him responsible for receiving the sideline calls and helping get the defense organized before the snap.

Overshown and Hooker are officially out

Neither Overshown nor Hooker practiced Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, so their final designations were not a surprise. The significance comes from what Dallas now has to replace.

Overshown suffered a hamstring strain in the Cowboys’ Week 1 loss to the New York Giants. Hooker fractured his forearm in the same game and underwent surgery earlier in the week. Dallas had already indicated both players were expected to miss time, and Friday’s report confirmed they will not be available for the divisional matchup with Washington.

The Cowboys did receive better news elsewhere. Offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius and edge rusher James Houston practiced fully Friday and carry no game designation, leaving Overshown and Hooker as Dallas’ two confirmed absences from the final report.

Jaishawn Barham gets the green dot

The most important depth-chart development is Barham’s assignment. Schottenheimer said the rookie third-round pick will start at middle linebacker and handle the green-dot communication duties against the Commanders.

The green dot is more than a symbolic role. The designated defender receives the play call from the sideline through the helmet communication system, relays the call in the huddle and helps the unit get aligned before the snap. That makes Barham’s Week 2 responsibility unusually large for a rookie making an early-season start.

Schottenheimer downplayed the mystique around the job while praising Barham’s command of the defense. Even so, the practical burden is real: Dallas is asking a young linebacker to replace Overshown’s snaps while also serving as the communication hub for a defense trying to correct the problems that showed up in Week 1.

Dallas needs a cleaner defensive performance

The Cowboys are coming off a 28-20 loss to the Giants in which New York generated enough explosive offense to put Dallas in early-season catch-up mode. FSN’s Week 1 recap of the Giants-Cowboys game detailed how New York controlled key stretches of the matchup.

That makes the Week 2 personnel changes more important than a routine injury substitution. Dallas is not simply replacing two starters in a defense that played cleanly. It is making those changes while trying to improve communication, pursuit and assignment discipline against another NFC East opponent.

Barham’s performance will be part of that equation. The Cowboys need him to diagnose formations quickly, communicate checks clearly and still play fast enough to handle his own responsibilities once the ball is snapped.

Hooker’s absence changes the secondary

Hooker’s loss creates a separate challenge on the back end. The veteran safety brings experience to a secondary that already has to account for Jayden Daniels’ ability to stress defenses both vertically and outside structure.

Dallas has known for several days that Hooker would miss time, so the coaching staff has had a full practice week to prepare the replacement plan. That is different from an in-game injury adjustment, but it does not make the snaps easy to replace. The Cowboys will need their available safeties and corners to communicate cleanly when Washington uses motion, bunch formations or quarterback movement to distort coverage rules.

Washington has injury problems of its own

The Commanders are also entering Sunday short-handed. Linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo were ruled out Friday, while defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is questionable with a back issue.

FSN previously covered Luvu’s groin injury and uncertain Week 2 status earlier in the week. The final report resolved that question, leaving both teams without important defensive communicators or contributors.

Washington’s absences do not reduce the pressure on Dallas. They simply make Sunday a matchup in which depth and communication will matter on both sidelines.

Why Barham is the player to watch

Overshown and Hooker are established starters, so most attention naturally goes to the players Dallas is losing. But the more actionable Week 2 storyline is what the Cowboys are asking Barham to do in response.

If the rookie handles the green dot smoothly, Dallas can keep its structure intact without forcing another veteran to take on a communication job that changes his normal role. If there are alignment problems or slow substitutions, Washington can use tempo and formation changes to test him repeatedly.

The Commanders also have a quarterback capable of punishing hesitation. Daniels can extend plays, attack open grass and force linebackers to make decisions between coverage responsibility and pursuit. A young MIKE linebacker making the calls will have to process those situations quickly.

What comes next

Friday settled the Cowboys’ availability questions: Overshown and Hooker are out, Cornelius and Houston are cleared, and Barham is set to start at MIKE with the green dot.

The next test is whether Dallas can turn a week of preparation into a cleaner defensive performance. The Cowboys already knew they would be without two important players for at least part of the early season. Now the replacement plan is official, and a rookie linebacker will be at the center of it when Dallas faces Washington.
