Kyler Murray has cleared the NFL concussion protocol and will return to the Minnesota Vikings’ starting lineup for Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced the decision Monday, closing the short-term quarterback question that followed Murray’s Week 1 concussion and his Week 2 absence against Chicago.

What changed for Kyler Murray

Murray spent last week progressing through the concussion protocol but did not receive final clearance in time to face the Bears. Minnesota started Carson Wentz instead.

FSN reported Friday that Murray had been ruled out for Week 2 while Wentz took over the starting job. The new development is definitive: Murray has now completed the protocol and is cleared to return against Tampa Bay.

Wentz handled the temporary assignment

The Vikings did not have to rush Murray back. Wentz started Minnesota’s 9-3 win over Chicago, helping the team improve to 2-0 while the starter completed the required recovery process.

That result gives Minnesota room to treat Murray’s return as a medical clearance rather than an emergency response to a loss. Wentz remains an experienced option behind him, and the Vikings can now reset the depth chart with Murray back at No. 1.

Minnesota gets its planned starter back before Tampa Bay

Murray’s return matters beyond one game because the Vikings built their offense around his mobility, off-schedule playmaking and ability to stress defenses outside structure. Wentz gave Minnesota stability during the absence, but the offense can again prepare around the quarterback the team chose to lead the 2026 season.

The matchup with Tampa Bay will also be Murray’s first full game opportunity since the concussion. He exited the season opener early, then missed Week 2, so Minnesota will be evaluating both performance and how he responds to contact after clearing the protocol.

The quarterback room returns to its intended order

Wentz shifts back into the veteran backup role, while J.J. McCarthy remains part of a quarterback room Minnesota designed to protect itself against exactly this type of early-season disruption.

FSN previously examined Minnesota’s decision to carry Murray, Wentz and McCarthy in a clearly defined hierarchy. The first two weeks tested that setup immediately, and the Vikings came through the stretch without a loss.

What to watch in Week 3

The biggest on-field question is whether Minnesota changes Murray’s rushing usage or pocket movement after the concussion. Clearing the protocol means he has satisfied the league’s return requirements, but the Vikings can still manage how aggressively they expose him to contact.

Practice participation later in the week should provide another useful checkpoint, although O’Connell’s announcement already establishes Murray as the starter for Sunday.
