The Baltimore Ravens have placed rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane on injured reserve after he underwent wrist surgery Wednesday, turning an expected multi-week absence into an official roster move. Baltimore promoted veteran receiver Chris Moore from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in the corresponding transaction.
Lane must now miss at least four games before he is eligible to return. The move is a material update from the initial recovery outlook reported earlier this week, when surgery was expected and the Ravens were hoping for roughly a one-month timetable.
Lane’s wrist injury is now an official IR absence
Lane injured his wrist during Baltimore’s Week 1 win over Indianapolis. The third-round rookie had one catch for 11 yards in his NFL debut before leaving, and subsequent evaluation led to surgery Wednesday morning.
The Ravens’ decision to use injured reserve gives the roster clarity while Lane begins his recovery. Head coach Jesse Minter indicated Wednesday that Baltimore remains optimistic the rookie can return relatively quickly once he becomes eligible, but the four-game minimum now establishes the earliest possible return window.
FSN previously covered the earlier stage of the injury when Lane was expected to undergo wrist surgery with a return target around one month. The new development is that the procedure has now happened and the Ravens have formally moved him to injured reserve.
Chris Moore moves onto the active roster
Baltimore promoted Chris Moore from the practice squad to fill Lane’s roster spot. The 33-year-old veteran is a familiar option for the Ravens and was already part of the Week 1 game plan after being elevated for the Indianapolis matchup.
Moore made one catch for 53 yards against the Colts, giving Baltimore an immediate veteran option while the receiver rotation changes. He has extensive NFL experience and has played for Baltimore, Houston, Tennessee, Arizona and Washington during his career.
The Ravens also brought veteran cornerback Amani Oruwariye back to the practice squad after Moore’s promotion opened a spot there.
Baltimore’s receiver depth is under early pressure
Lane’s move to injured reserve comes while Baltimore is also monitoring Zay Flowers. Flowers did not practice Wednesday because of the hamstring injury that ended his Week 1 performance after 150 receiving yards and a touchdown in the first half.
That combination creates a significant early-season depth test. Rashod Bateman remains one of the established veterans, while Devontez Walker, Elijah Sarratt, LaJohntay Wester and Moore are among the options who could see expanded opportunities if Flowers is limited or unavailable against New Orleans.
The Ravens do not need one player to replace Lane’s exact role. The more practical approach is likely to be a redistribution of snaps and targets while the rookie heals, with Moore providing experience and the younger receivers competing for larger roles.
What to watch next
The next checkpoints are Lane’s post-surgery recovery and Flowers’ participation later in the week. Lane is now unavailable for at least four games regardless of how quickly the wrist responds, while Flowers’ status could determine how aggressively Baltimore reshapes its Week 2 receiver rotation.
Baltimore hosts the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The offense still has established playmakers around Lamar Jackson, but the receiver room will look different with Lane officially on injured reserve and Flowers’ hamstring status unresolved.
