The Washington Commanders have moved from waiting on Jayden Daniels’ immediate medical evaluation to making a concrete Week 3 quarterback plan: Marcus Mariota is expected to start against the Seattle Seahawks while Daniels consults specialists about his dislocated left elbow.

Daniels underwent additional imaging Monday after reinjuring the same elbow he dislocated last season. Head coach Dan Quinn said Washington is still gathering medical opinions and does not yet have a firm return timetable, but Daniels will not be available for the Week 3 home opener.

That is a meaningful development from the initial postgame update. FSN previously reported that Daniels dislocated his left elbow against Dallas and initial X-rays showed no fracture. The question then was whether further testing would reveal a path back for Week 3. Washington now knows it will prepare Mariota as the starter.

Daniels will meet with specialists before Washington sets a timeline

The Commanders are taking extra time before committing to a recovery plan because Daniels has injured this elbow before. He dislocated the same left elbow during the 2025 season and later aggravated it again, making this latest injury more complicated than a first-time dislocation.

Daniels had imaging Monday and is expected to consult specialists Tuesday and Wednesday. The team has not announced whether surgery will be required, and Quinn has avoided placing a timetable on the quarterback until those evaluations are complete.

That distinction matters. A dislocation without a fracture is encouraging compared with the most severe possible outcomes, but ligament stability, recurrence risk and the long-term health of the joint will help determine when Daniels can safely return.

Marcus Mariota gets the Week 3 start against Seattle

Mariota replaced Daniels after halftime in the 37-20 loss to Dallas and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. He now gets a full week of preparation as Washington’s starting quarterback rather than entering in relief.

The matchup is especially notable because Seattle was the opponent when Daniels first dislocated the elbow last season. Washington’s immediate focus, however, is on building a game plan around Mariota rather than trying to rush Daniels back for a symbolic rematch.

Mariota gives the Commanders an experienced backup who can still threaten defenses with his legs, but the offense will inevitably change without Daniels’ combination of designed-run value, off-schedule creation and vertical passing ability.

Washington is not rushing to add another veteran quarterback

For now, the Commanders are not treating Daniels’ injury as a reason to immediately overhaul the quarterback room. Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis is positioned to serve as Mariota’s backup while the team waits for a clearer diagnosis and recovery plan for Daniels.

That approach suggests Washington wants the medical process to define its next roster move. If Daniels’ expected absence grows from a short-term issue into a longer rehabilitation, the calculus could change.

The next update should be about treatment, not just availability

The central question is no longer whether Daniels can play in Week 3. He cannot. The next meaningful update is whether the elbow can be stabilized and rehabilitated without surgery and how much time Washington’s medical staff believes he will need before returning to football activity.

That answer has implications beyond a single game. The Commanders are 0-2, the quarterback has now injured the same elbow multiple times, and Washington must balance the urgency of the season against the long-term health of the player around whom the offense is built.

Until the specialist consultations are complete, any exact return date would be speculation. What is settled is the Week 3 plan: Mariota will lead the offense against Seattle while Daniels remains out.
