Jaxson Dart Believed to Have Sprained MCL; MRI Set After Negative X-Rays

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is now believed to have suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee, a materially more specific diagnosis than the initial knee-injury designation that ended his night against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Giants first announced that Dart was questionable to return after he was injured on the opening possession of Monday night’s game, then ruled him out. Subsequent reporting from ESPN, citing NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, said initial examinations pointed to an MCL sprain, X-rays were negative and Dart is expected to miss some time. An MRI is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the severity.

That changes the focus from whether Dart could return Monday night to how long the Giants may be without their starting quarterback. It also represents a clear follow-up to FSN’s initial report on Dart’s knee injury, which came before the negative X-rays and preliminary MCL assessment were known.

What changed in the Jaxson Dart injury outlook

The encouraging part of the early update is that the X-rays did not show a fracture. The more important next step is the MRI, because an MCL sprain can range from a relatively short absence to a multi-week recovery depending on the grade and whether other structures in the knee are involved.

At this stage, there is no confirmed MRI diagnosis and no official return timetable. The responsible takeaway is narrower: the Giants appear to have avoided an obvious fracture, the working diagnosis is an MCL sprain, and Dart is expected to miss at least some time while New York waits for imaging.

How Dart was injured against the Rams

Dart was hurt with 11:20 remaining in the first quarter on the Giants’ first possession. He took a hit from Rams defenders Josaiah Stewart and Byron Young while throwing on third down, with his left knee bending awkwardly during the contact.

Dart was able to walk off the field and later went to the locker room under his own power. The Giants initially listed him as questionable before ruling him out. He finished 3-of-5 passing for 20 yards before Jameis Winston took over.

Without Dart, New York struggled to sustain offense in a 28-6 loss that dropped the Giants to 1-1. The game was already difficult from a personnel standpoint, and losing the quarterback on the opening series made the challenge substantially steeper.

Jameis Winston becomes the immediate fallback option

If Dart misses Week 3 or beyond, Winston is the most obvious short-term starter. New York has already invested in veteran insurance at the position, extending Winston earlier this month. FSN covered the move when the Giants extended Winston and guard Jon Runyan through 2028.

That depth now matters much sooner than the Giants hoped. New York opened the season with an encouraging win over Dallas, when Dart played one of his strongest games as a pro. FSN’s Week 1 recap detailed how the Giants began the John Harbaugh era with a 28-20 victory.

The Giants now have a short turnaround before facing the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. Whether Dart has any realistic chance to play will depend first on Tuesday’s MRI and then on how New York evaluates his stability, pain and mobility.

The next update that matters

The MRI result is the key checkpoint. Until that imaging is complete, any precise return estimate would be premature. If the preliminary MCL diagnosis is confirmed without additional damage, New York will then be able to establish a more reliable rehabilitation timeline and determine whether Winston needs to prepare for an extended starting role.
