The Washington Commanders are reportedly adding veteran interior offensive lineman Lucas Patrick to the 53-man roster, giving the offense another experienced option at center and guard before Sunday’s NFC East matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

Hogs Haven reported Wednesday that Washington is signing Patrick after hosting him for a visit Tuesday. NFL insider Tom Pelissero was cited as the first to report the agreement. Patrick brings 10 seasons of NFL experience and 65 career starts, giving the Commanders a versatile veteran who has played both center and guard.

Why Washington is adding Lucas Patrick now

The timing points to depth and flexibility more than a wholesale change to the starting line. Washington is entering Week 2 with an offense that needs dependable interior protection and experienced contingency options, especially with a divisional road game coming up in Dallas.

Patrick’s appeal is straightforward: he has played multiple interior spots and has handled starting assignments across several organizations. That kind of flexibility matters during the regular season because one injury can force multiple offensive-line positions to reshuffle.

The Commanders do not need Patrick to become an immediate centerpiece. They need him to learn the system quickly, provide a credible option behind the current starters, and give the coaching staff more ways to handle injuries or uneven play without dramatically changing the entire unit.

Patrick brings experience at center and guard

Patrick has spent time with Green Bay, Chicago, New Orleans, Cincinnati and most recently the New York Giants during the offseason. His NFL background includes substantial work at center and both guard spots, making him the kind of veteran who can dress as a reserve while covering several interior positions.

That is particularly useful for an offense built around Jayden Daniels. Interior pressure can disrupt a quarterback even when the tackles are holding up, and having a veteran with experience making line calls at center can help stabilize a unit when the lineup changes.

FSN has already been tracking Washington’s early-season health questions on defense, including Frankie Luvu’s groin strain and uncertain Week 2 status. Patrick’s addition gives the Commanders a little more insurance on the other side of the ball as the roster settles after Week 1.

What the move could mean against Dallas

Washington travels to Dallas for a game that will test communication and protection in a divisional environment. Patrick’s experience could make him useful even if he is not immediately inserted into the starting five.

The most realistic short-term role is as active-game depth capable of stepping in at more than one interior position. If Washington needs to adjust at center or guard during the game, Patrick gives the staff another veteran option rather than forcing a younger player into an unfamiliar role.

The Cowboys also present a useful measuring stick for Washington’s offensive structure. FSN’s 2026 Cowboys outlook highlighted a roster built to put more pressure on Dak Prescott to deliver. For the Commanders, keeping Daniels clean and the offense on schedule will be one of the clearest ways to counter that challenge.

What to watch next

The next step is the team’s official roster announcement and then how quickly Patrick is incorporated into practice. His position in the game-day pecking order will become clearer once Washington begins its Week 2 preparation in earnest.

If he can handle multiple interior assignments quickly, the signing gives the Commanders exactly what a September roster move should provide: experienced flexibility without requiring the team to redesign the offense around a new player.
