The New England Patriots will be without starting cornerback Carlton Davis III for Sunday’s Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after downgrading him to out with a neck injury.
Davis did not participate in the Patriots’ final three practices of the week. New England made the designation official Saturday while also elevating punter Mitch Wishnowsky from the practice squad.
The update gives the Patriots a clear secondary problem against a Steelers offense that is also shorthanded. Pittsburgh has ruled out wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., but New England still has to replace a veteran corner who played nearly every defensive snap in the opener.
Carlton Davis III will miss the Patriots’ home opener
Davis started Week 1 and played 49 of New England’s 50 defensive snaps against Seattle, according to the Patriots’ own roster analysis. That workload reflects how central he is to the starting cornerback rotation.
His absence leaves Christian Gonzalez as the most established outside corner available and pushes the rest of the depth chart into larger roles. Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, Karon Prunty and Channing Canada are among the options New England can use depending on matchup and package.
The Patriots had carried Davis through the week as a player to monitor, but three straight missed practices made his status increasingly difficult to project. Saturday’s downgrade removes the uncertainty.
New England now has to adjust the cornerback rotation
The immediate question is not simply who starts opposite Gonzalez, but how the Patriots divide snaps across base defense, nickel and specialty packages. Davis brings experience in press coverage and outside assignments, and replacing that role may require more than one player.
New England could lean on Jones in sub packages while using Woods or another outside option for longer stretches. The coaching staff also has the option of changing how aggressively it asks the corners to play man coverage if it wants to protect a less experienced combination.
The Steelers are dealing with their own absences
Pittsburgh will not have Pittman, who was downgraded to out Saturday with a foot injury. The Steelers also ruled out cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
That changes the shape of the matchup on both sides. New England loses a starting defensive back, while Pittsburgh loses a starting receiver and one of its top corners. FSN has already tracked the Steelers’ Week 2 injury situation, including Joey Porter Jr.’s practice progression earlier in the week.
Wishnowsky elevated again with Bryce Baringer on IR
New England also elevated veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky from the practice squad for a second straight week. Bryce Baringer remains on injured reserve and cannot return until later in the season, so Wishnowsky is again expected to handle punting duties.
The move itself is routine, but it matters for roster planning because a standard practice-squad player can only be elevated a limited number of times before the team must make a longer-term roster decision.
What changes for the Patriots on Sunday
The biggest consequence is in the secondary. Davis was not a rotational luxury; he was a starter playing essentially a full snap load. Losing him forces New England to redistribute meaningful defensive snaps against a Pittsburgh offense that will still test coverage depth even without Pittman.
The Patriots now know exactly what they are preparing for: no Davis, a reshuffled cornerback group and a Steelers receiving corps that is also operating without one of its starters.
