The Detroit Lions added starting cornerback D.J. Reed to their Week 2 injury report Tuesday with a foot issue, introducing a new question in the secondary just two days before a Thursday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills.
Detroit’s official practice report listed Reed as a limited participant after he was not listed Monday. Because the Lions held a walkthrough, the participation designation was an estimate of what Reed would have done in a full practice rather than a full-speed workout result.
Reed is the new concern on Detroit’s short week
Reed’s addition was the only new change on Tuesday’s report. Left guard Christian Mahogany remained out with a hip injury, right tackle Blake Miller remained out with a knee injury, center Juice Scruggs stayed limited with a knee issue and defensive back Christian Izien was again a full participant while working back from a groin injury.
The timing makes Reed’s status especially important. Detroit does not have the normal recovery and practice window before facing Buffalo on Thursday night, so Wednesday’s final injury designations will carry more weight than usual.
Reed played almost the entire opener. The Detroit News reported that he logged 89 snaps in the Lions’ overtime win against New Orleans, leaving the field for only one defensive play. That heavy workload makes a new foot issue worth monitoring even though there is not yet an indication that it is a long-term problem.
Why Reed matters against Buffalo
Detroit’s secondary is preparing for a Bills offense built around Josh Allen and a passing game that can stress coverage vertically and after the catch. Losing a starting outside corner, or even having him play at less than full mobility, would affect how aggressively the Lions can match Buffalo’s receivers.
Reed is in his second season with Detroit and brings veteran man-coverage experience to a secondary that has already dealt with injuries. Rock Ya-Sin is the next experienced outside option, while Izien’s progress toward returning could help the overall defensive-back rotation.
The Lions are already navigating another significant injury on offense. FSN previously reported that Isiah Pacheco underwent back surgery and could be sidelined until roughly December, so the short week is forcing Detroit to manage several moving pieces at once.
Detroit’s Week 1 workload adds context
The Lions are coming off a physically demanding 31-30 overtime win over the Saints. FSN’s Week 1 recap detailed a game that required Detroit to survive a 21-point comeback and play extra football before finally escaping with the win.
That context matters on a Thursday turnaround. Players who logged heavy snaps Sunday have less time to recover, and the Lions’ injury report reflects that strain across both lines and now the secondary.
What Wednesday’s report will tell us
The most important update will be whether Reed remains limited, is upgraded to full participation or receives a game-status designation that puts Thursday in doubt. Detroit’s final report should also clarify whether Mahogany or Miller has a realistic chance to play.
If Reed is cleared, the Tuesday listing may prove to be a manageable short-week precaution. If he is limited again or downgraded, the Lions could have to lean more heavily on their veteran cornerback depth against one of the AFC’s most dangerous quarterbacks.
For now, the foot injury is a new variable rather than a confirmed absence. With kickoff approaching quickly, Detroit will not have to wait long for clarity.
